What it is

Zinc oxide is a mineral (inorganic) sunscreen filter that sits on and within the upper skin and shields it from ultraviolet light. Though long described as a physical blocker that reflects UV, current evidence shows it works primarily by absorbing UV photons across the UVB, UVA2, and UVA1 ranges, making it one of the broadest-spectrum single filters available.

Benefits

Provides broad-spectrum protection against sunburn, photoaging, and UV damage; regulatory and formulation evidence supports use at concentrations up to roughly 25%, with finished sunscreens typically formulated in the 5-25% range to reach a given SPF.

When to take it

Apply in the morning as the last step before makeup and reapply roughly every two hours of sun exposure. As a sunscreen it is itself the SPF layer, so no additional UV pairing is needed.

Side effects

Generally very well tolerated and low-irritation, making it a common choice for sensitive skin. High-concentration mineral formulas can leave a visible white cast and feel heavier on the skin.
