What it is
Yohimbine is an alkaloid from the bark of the African yohimbe tree and a potent stimulant. It blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, increasing the release of noradrenaline, which can mobilize fat and raise alertness but also drives its cardiovascular and anxiety effects.
Benefits
In one RCT, 20 mg/day (split) for 21 days reduced body-fat percentage in lean trained athletes without changing weight or muscle. Fat mobilization appears greater when fasted, but overall weight-loss evidence is limited and mixed.
When to take it
When used, it is typically dosed before fasted exercise and split into smaller amounts, starting low to assess tolerance. Avoid late-day use due to stimulant effects on sleep.
Side effects
Yohimbine raises blood pressure and heart rate and commonly causes anxiety, nervousness, jitteriness, and insomnia; high doses can trigger panic, dangerous blood-pressure spikes, and require medical attention. It is not suitable for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or anxiety disorders, or those taking MAOIs or other stimulants, and it interacts with many medications.
