What it is
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a Southeast Asian root traditionally used for male vitality; its bioactive compounds include quassinoids such as eurycomanone. It is studied mainly as a standardized hot-water root extract for testosterone, fatigue, and sexual function.
Benefits
A meta-analysis of clinical trials found Eurycoma longifolia increased serum total testosterone, with the most pronounced effect in men with low baseline testosterone, and a 6-month RCT at 200 mg/day improved erectile function in androgen-deficient men. Studied doses of standardized extract range from about 200-600 mg/day.
When to take it
Usually taken once daily in the morning, with or without food; trials showing testosterone or erectile-function effects ran for weeks to 6 months.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated in short trials; reported effects include insomnia, restlessness, and mild digestive upset. Long-term safety and effects on hormone-sensitive conditions are not well established, and extract quality varies between products.
