What it is

Snail mucin (snail secretion filtrate) is the filtered secretion of garden snails, used as a leave-on skincare ingredient. It is a mixture of glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans, allantoin, and antioxidants thought to hydrate skin and support its barrier and repair processes.

Benefits

Used to hydrate skin and support a smoother surface, with preclinical and small human studies suggesting benefits for wound healing and signs of aging. A single meaningful percentage does not exist because products use whole filtrate at widely varying, undisclosed concentrations rather than a standardized active dose.

When to take it

Typically applied to damp skin after cleansing and before heavier creams, in the morning or evening. It does not increase sun sensitivity, but daytime SPF is still recommended.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated, though allergic reactions are possible, particularly in people sensitive to the secretion's proteins. Patch testing is sensible before broad use.
