What it is

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that converts to retinoic acid in the skin. Retinoic acid binds nuclear receptors that regulate keratinocyte differentiation and collagen synthesis.

Benefits

Reduces fine lines, evens tone, and improves overall skin texture with consistent use over 12+ weeks. Stronger evidence than most other skincare actives.

When to take it

Apply at night, as retinoids degrade in light, and always pair with broad-spectrum SPF in the morning. Start 2-3 nights per week and build up frequency as tolerance develops.

Side effects

Irritation, peeling, and increased sun sensitivity, especially when starting. Build tolerance gradually and pair with daily SPF.
