What it is
Panax ginseng (Korean or Asian ginseng) is an adaptogenic root whose active compounds are triterpene saponins called ginsenosides. Standardized extracts (often the G115 extract, about 4% ginsenosides) are studied for effects on cognition, fatigue, and mental performance.
Benefits
Single doses of standardized Panax ginseng (G115) around 200-400 mg have produced short-term improvements in aspects of working memory, calmness, and mental fatigue in healthy adults, with 400 mg often the more effective dose. Effects are modest and largely acute rather than long-term.
When to take it
Studied as a morning dose, with or without food; taking it later in the day may disturb sleep. Cognitive effects in trials were often seen within hours of a single dose.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated short-term; reported effects include insomnia (especially later in the day), headache, digestive upset, and occasionally lowered blood sugar. May interact with anticoagulants and some other medications.
