What it is

Matrixyl is the trade name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (palmitoyl-KTTKS), a signal peptide designed to mimic a fragment of collagen. By imitating collagen breakdown products, it prompts skin fibroblasts to ramp up production of collagen and other matrix proteins. It is one of the most widely used anti-wrinkle peptides in cosmetic formulations.

Benefits

Clinical and ex vivo studies of palmitoyl pentapeptide complexes report measurable reductions in wrinkle appearance over a few weeks, driven by increased collagen and basement-membrane protein expression. It is commonly used at roughly 3-5% of the branded ingredient solution (a much lower actual peptide concentration) and is well tolerated. Marketing claims often overstate the effect size, so realistic expectations are modest improvement.

When to take it

Can be used morning and night on clean skin before moisturizer, and it layers well with most other actives. Visible change requires consistent use over several weeks to months.

Side effects

Matrixyl is generally well tolerated with a low irritation profile, making it suitable for most skin types including sensitive skin. Reactions are uncommon and typically mild.
