What it is
Maca is a root vegetable from the Peruvian Andes (Lepidium meyenii) taken in dried or powdered form as a supplement. It is marketed for libido, energy, and fertility, though its mechanism is not well established and it does not appear to act on sex hormones. It is consumed as a food-like powder or in capsules.
Benefits
Small trials suggest 1.5-3 grams per day may improve sexual desire in some adults, with the most consistent signal for libido rather than erectile function or hormones. Evidence is preliminary and effects, where seen, are modest.
When to take it
Taken daily, often in the morning; some users split the dose. Studies typically ran 6-12 weeks, suggesting consistent daily use over weeks.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated in studies, with occasional mild gastrointestinal upset. Long-term safety data are limited, and people with hormone-sensitive conditions or thyroid concerns may wish to consult a clinician.
