What it is
L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to the catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. Under acute stress these neurotransmitters can become depleted, and supplemental tyrosine may help replenish them to support cognitive function.
Benefits
Studies suggest tyrosine can help preserve cognitive performance during short-term stress such as cold, fatigue, or heavy mental load, typically using 100-150 mg/kg of body weight about 60 minutes beforehand. Benefits appear only when neurotransmitters are being depleted, not under normal rested conditions.
When to take it
Take about 60 minutes before a demanding or stressful task; dose is per kilogram of body weight.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated short-term at doses up to 150 mg/kg, with occasional mild nausea or headache. Long-term safety is less established.
