What it is

Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), a next-generation hydroxy acid with a larger, multi-hydroxyl molecule. It exfoliates the skin surface like an AHA but penetrates more slowly, while also acting as a humectant and antioxidant that helps reinforce the stratum corneum barrier.

Benefits

Provides gentle exfoliation, hydration, and antioxidant support comparable to AHAs while strengthening barrier function and lowering transepidermal water loss; cosmetic leave-on products typically use roughly 4-10%, with peels studied at 10-30%.

When to take it

Can be used AM or PM; pair with daily broad-spectrum SPF as with other hydroxy acids. Its gentleness makes more frequent use feasible than with stronger AHAs.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated even on sensitive, rosacea-prone, or atopic skin, with less stinging than glycolic or lactic acid. Mild dryness or tingling is possible, and as a hydroxy acid it can modestly increase sun sensitivity.
