What it is
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an herb whose seed extracts, often standardized for saponins, are used in supplements aimed at libido and testosterone. Proposed mechanisms include modulation of enzymes involved in testosterone metabolism, though the exact pathway is not firmly established.
Benefits
Standardized fenugreek extract at about 500–600 mg/day has shown improvements in libido and sexual function over roughly 8–12 weeks. Its effect on measured testosterone is mixed—some trials report modest increases in free or saliva testosterone, while others find no significant change versus placebo.
When to take it
Taken once daily with a meal in most trials; benefits accrued over weeks of consistent use rather than acutely, so there is no specific pre-workout timing requirement.
Side effects
Common effects are mild and digestive (bloating, gas, diarrhea) and a maple-syrup-like body odor; it may lower blood sugar, so caution is warranted for people on diabetes medication. Avoid in pregnancy.
