What it is
Citrulline malate pairs L-citrulline with malic acid, an intermediate in energy metabolism. The citrulline portion supports nitric oxide production and blood flow, while malate is theorized to aid energy turnover, though the combined mechanism is not fully established.
Benefits
The most studied dose is a single 8 g serving taken before resistance exercise, where it shows small benefits for muscular endurance such as added reps to failure. Evidence for power, maximal strength, and recovery is weak or absent.
When to take it
Typically taken as a single 8 g dose about 60 minutes before resistance training.
Side effects
May cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort at the 8 g dose. Otherwise well tolerated in healthy adults.
