What it is

Centella asiatica, often labeled cica, is a botanical extract rich in triterpenoid compounds such as madecassoside and asiaticoside. These actives support collagen synthesis, calm inflammation, and reinforce the skin barrier, which is why cica is widely used in soothing and repair products. It is most associated with reducing redness and supporting wound healing.

Benefits

Centella formulations help calm redness and discomfort and improve barrier function, with a clinical study in sensitive skin showing improvement over four weeks, and its key compound madecassoside has shown barrier and wound-healing benefits at roughly 0.1-1%. It is a go-to ingredient for compromised, irritated, or post-procedure skin. Cica pairs well with barrier lipids and is gentle enough for frequent use.

When to take it

Can be used morning and night, and is especially helpful after exfoliation, sun exposure, or procedures when skin needs calming. Layer under moisturizer as a soothing step.

Side effects

Centella is well tolerated by most skin, including sensitive types, with allergic reactions being uncommon. Patch testing is still sensible for very reactive skin.
