What it is
Benzoyl peroxide is a topical antibacterial agent used to treat acne. It works by releasing oxygen into the pore, which kills Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria tied to inflammatory breakouts, and it also has a mild peeling action that helps clear pores. Unlike antibiotics, bacteria do not develop resistance to it.
Benefits
Benzoyl peroxide reduces inflammatory acne lesions such as papules and pustules, and a classic trial found 2.5% as effective as 5% and 10% while causing less irritation. Because of this, the 2.5-5% range is generally preferred for the face, with 10% reserved for tougher or body acne. It is often paired with other actives like niacinamide or salicylic acid in acne regimens.
When to take it
Start once daily or every other day to build tolerance, applied to clean, dry skin; pairing with a moisturizer reduces irritation. A leave-on at night or a short-contact wash both work, and daytime sunscreen is recommended.
Side effects
Dryness, redness, peeling, and a stinging or burning sensation are common, especially early on and at higher strengths. It bleaches fabric and hair, so care is needed with towels and pillowcases.
