What it is

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound from Psoralea corylifolia that is structurally unrelated to retinoids but produces retinol-like effects on gene expression. It supports collagen production and cell turnover while offering antioxidant activity. It is often positioned as a gentler, plant-based alternative to retinol.

Benefits

In a randomized double-blind trial, 0.5% bakuchiol applied twice daily reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation comparably to 0.5% retinol, with fewer reports of scaling and stinging. Most clinical evidence centers on the 0.5-1% range.

When to take it

Can be used morning or night and, unlike retinoids, does not appear to increase photosensitivity, though daily SPF remains good practice. It pairs well with most other actives.

Side effects

Bakuchiol is generally well tolerated, with less scaling and stinging reported than retinol. Mild irritation is still possible, and long-term safety data are more limited than for retinoids.
