What it is
Aloe vera is a plant-derived gel whose polysaccharides and other compounds soothe skin and support wound repair. Topically it adds light hydration and is associated with faster healing of minor burns and superficial wounds. It is most often used as a calming, post-sun or post-procedure ingredient.
Benefits
May soothe irritated skin and speed healing of minor burns and superficial wounds; trials commonly use aloe gel as the topical agent rather than a fixed percentage, so a precise effective concentration is not well defined.
When to take it
Can be used AM or PM as a soothing, lightweight hydrator. Layers under heavier moisturizers; it does not provide sun protection, so use a separate sunscreen during the day.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated; allergic contact dermatitis can occur, particularly in people sensitive to plants in the lily family. Patch testing is reasonable for reactive skin.
