What it is
Allantoin is a compound found in plants such as comfrey and also produced naturally in the body. Topically it is used as a soothing, moisturizing agent that helps calm irritation and support skin repair, and at higher concentrations it has a keratolytic effect that softens and sheds rough surface cells.
Benefits
Soothes and moisturizes skin and supports wound healing and the look of smoother skin; cosmetic products generally use about 0.5-2%, where it is calming and hydrating, while keratolytic softening occurs from roughly 5% upward.
When to take it
Can be used AM and PM and pairs well with stronger actives to offset irritation. No specific SPF requirement, though daily sunscreen remains advisable.
Side effects
Considered very gentle and non-irritating, with adverse reactions rare. It does not increase sun sensitivity.
