What it is

Adapalene is a synthetic third-generation retinoid available over the counter (typically at 0.1%). It binds retinoic acid receptors in skin to normalize how cells lining the pores shed, which reduces the clogging and inflammation that drive acne.

Benefits

Reduces inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions; the OTC 0.1% gel produces meaningful lesion reduction over about 12 weeks with efficacy comparable to prescription tretinoin 0.025% gel but better tolerability.

When to take it

Apply a thin layer at night to clean, dry skin; expect a purging/adjustment period over the first weeks. Always pair with broad-spectrum SPF in the morning.

Side effects

Early use commonly causes dryness, redness, peeling, and stinging (a mild retinoid dermatitis) that usually eases with continued use. It increases sun sensitivity.
